Monastery Esfigmenou
Moni Esfigmenou (greek-orthodox; holiday: 40th day past eastern; phone: 23770-23282)
The to the Ascension of Christ consecrated cloister was built around 1016. Supposedly it should have been founded by Pulchreria, the sister of emperor Theodosios II. The first documentary mention comes from the year 1030.
In this cloister a copy of the "painter's manual of the Mount Athos" was discovered in the 19th century. Besides, it concerns around an extremely important source to default (in which to themselves the painting monks have to hold), but also to the general understanding of the icon painting.
